For several years, we have proudly contributed to the FNB Wines2Whales in various container forms. Once again, this year, our offering included our unique Big Box Sleeper Container, affectionately dubbed the “Big Box Hotel.”
This innovative accommodation solution not only provided a cosy refuge for deserving riders but also embodied our commitment to enhancing their race experience. Witnessing the sheer joy on these athletes’ faces when they realise they have been selected for a night of comfort was truly priceless. This year was particularly memorable, as inclement weather posed significant challenges; yet, amidst those trials, our containers stood as beacons of warmth and rest. Here are some stories about the lucky riders who had a chance to spend a night or two in our luxurious Big Box Hotel.
Shiraz Winners
Our Shiraz winners were Willem Le Roux and Hannie van Huyssteen, representing the spirited team “Love Your Nuts,” which proudly celebrated its 13th year participating in events dedicated to raising awareness for Testicular Cancer. Throughout their journey at the FNB Wines2Whales, they rode with unyielding enthusiasm, donning their signature speedos that not only epitomised their commitment to a worthy cause but also sparked joy and camaraderie among fellow riders.
Their infectious energy transcended the trails, effectively roping in other participants to join this noble initiative in subsequent years. By blending fun with philanthropy, Willem and Hannie have become ambassadors for both health advocacy and community spirit within the biking community; a testament to how passion can fuel positive change while ensuring that every ride is memorable.
Pinotage Winners
As the final team to cross the line at the Pinotage race, Zubair Mangera and Yusuf Moolla endured relentless rain, snow, and bone-chilling 1°C temperatures. Their determination shone through as they navigated treacherous terrain under punishing conditions. After completing this formidable challenge, they deserved nothing less than a warm and peaceful night in our Big Box Hotel.
Chardonnay Winners
Our Chardonnay winners were Peter Hardcastle and Danie Louw, who epitomise resilience and camaraderie in the face of adversity. Peter, an avid cyclist, faced a life-altering challenge when he was involved in a severe accident while training for the FNB Wines 2Whales. One morning, as he ascended on his bike, a van abruptly pulled off the road, leading to an accident that resulted in him crashing through its back window.
This traumatic event left him hospitalised for months. Yet through this harrowing experience, something remarkable blossomed within Team “Langwiel v2.0.” Emerging from the ICU marked not just survival, but hope. Peter and Danie approached their participation in this prestigious cycling event not merely as competitors but as individuals celebrating life’s simple yet profound blessings—renewed faith, cherished family bonds, vibrant friendships, and an appreciation for health.
For Big Box Containers, each smile we see reinforces our belief that contributing positively to the lives of others enriches us all—an ethos perfectly encapsulated in that simple mantra about giving versus receiving.
