The FNB Wines2Whales was born out of the desire to create a world-class 3-day stage race in the Western Cape of South Africa. As a pioneer in the mountain bike race industry, these events have grown and welcomed more riders each year. They are aptly named after wines produced in the area and are must-do events for local and international mountain bikers alike.
The FNB Wine2Whales is a big event on Big Box’s yearly calendar. We proudly support the Wines2Whales events and associated initiatives each year.
About the 2022 Wines2Whales
One of its biggest draws is the route, which has been perfected over the past 12 years. In 2022, the FNB W2W went back to the original route and took riders from the wines of Lourensford to the whales of Onrus. Teams were also able to look forward to many new and exciting additions to the previous race since it hasn’t been raced since 2019!
The Chardonnay race was the most popular of the three events. It took place from 28 – 30 October offering riders the chance to be among the first to experience the brand-new trail sections especially created just for this year’s events. The Chardonnay was dedicated to Women’s racing, where we saw some of the world’s best female riders battle it out for the overall prize money and leader jerseys.
The Pinotage event took place from 31 October – 2 November and was the most relaxed of all three events and attracted a number of first-timers. The Pinotage also hosted the FNB Wines2Whales E-bike Race and Tour for riders who wanted to experience the FNB W2W with a little assistance.
The Shiraz took place over the last weekend of the race from 4 – 6 November and was created for riders who take up the pace and couldn’t wait to push themselves in a new way. While the Chardonnay celebrated the Women’s racing category, the Shiraz celebrated Men’s, Mixed and Exxaro teams racing categories in addition to honouring the determination of the rest of the field as they competed in their respective age categories.
How Big Box Containers supported Wines2Whales with our containers
Big Box Containers provided the Wines2Whales event organisers with logistical support in the form of Office- and Storage-Containers to Sleeper-Event Boxes providing extra comfort for riders to get the rest they deserve to face another day of optimal performance. Our Refrigerated Water Box-Containers, designed to provide riders with refreshing, ice-cold water during the events also got to show off and shine.
In addition to container-based administrative facilities, our Single-Phase Refrigeration Containers were the perfect fit for this prestigious event as they are eco friendly with a small carbon footprint, but also saved on electricity costs. Our Refrigerated Containers were used for the storage of perishables and also served as a preparation hub from where caterers could work their culinary magic as they served riders in the race village.
Our Big Box Container Sleeper Boxes were also up for grabs in a competition amongst the riders. Caroline Matsimela and Manti Mangane from the Matsimela Warriors team who raced in the first stage of the race won this special prize. They showed the most serious gees with infectious energy and were able to rest, recharge and recuperate in style.
