The FNB Wines2Whales is a significant event on Big Box’s annual schedule and has become a renowned 3-day stage event in the Western Cape. Since its inception, the FNB W2W race has gained popularity and attracted a larger number of participants annually. Inspired by the local wine industry, it is a must for both local and international mountain bikers.
Big Box Containers is proud to have been part of this prestigious event, and once again, our Big Boxes showed up and off in full force.
Regarding the 2024 FNB Wines2Whales Event…
Undoubtedly, the race’s biggest drawcard is its perfected route, which has been honed over the past 14 years. This year, teams embarked on the traditional journey from the wines of Lourensford to the whales of Hermanus. All enjoyed breathtaking views, newly added trails, and of course, the return of beloved old favorites.
The inaugural Chardonnay race, held from November 1-3, 2024, marked the first of the three FNB W2W events. It showcased female mountain bikers, honouring both Pro racers and age group contenders. Additionally, the event welcomed men’s and mixed teams who were keen to tackle the trails at the start of the FNB W2W race series.
Known for its laid-back atmosphere and relaxed vibe, The Pinotage event ran from November 4th to 6th and attracted the largest number of first-time participants in the FNB W2W series. The Pinotage also featured the FNB W2W E-bike Race and Tour, offering riders a chance to tackle the event with a little extra help.
The Shiraz, held during the final weekend of the race on November 8-10, is known for upping the intensity. While the Chardonnay recognised the Women’s racing category, the Shiraz also acknowledged the efforts of Men’s, Mixed, and Exxaro teams as well as participants in their age categories.

Big Box Containers’ logistical assistance at the FNB W2W event reached far and wide. Here is how our containers stepped up this year:
Big Box Office and Storage Containers
Our Office and Storage containers served as ticket and administrative offices and for storing valuable equipment on site. Our Storage Containers are tough and robust and are fitted with lockable doors. This gave event organisers peace of mind when it came to the safekeeping of their equipment.
Sleeper Event Boxes
The Big Box Container Sleeper Boxes, or “The Big Box Hotel” were enjoyed by riders, giving them a chance to relax, recharge, and rejuvenate in luxurious comfort before their next race.
Flatpacks aka the Big Box Chill Box
Our Big Box Flatpacks were converted into an inviting Chill Box. Riders were treated to a free Ice Plunge, courtesy of Fjord Plunge. This was Flat-out one of the coolest spots to chill at this year’s FNB W2W.

Refrigerated Containers
Our Single-Phase Refrigeration Containers were an ideal choice for this esteemed occasion due to their environmentally friendly features and minimal impact on the environment. They served both as a storage option for perishable goods and as a preparation centre where chefs could work their culinary magic while serving riders at the race village. Furthermore, our Refrigerated Water Box-Containers (fittingly named “Groot Dors?” and “Big Thirst?”) were stand-out heroes and specifically designed to provide ice-cold water for the riders during the event.
